Samsung J5100 is an entry level model by samsung. It's only good feature is screen and sound capture function. Input lag is low considering the price, so a good tv for gaming at this price. Blacks are not perfect and appear blueish. Color uniformity is also average. Sound is average if compared to Sony entry level models.
Though Samsung J5100 is an entry level model by Samsung but it looks quite good. Borders are made of good quality plastic in black color and are specially designed and molded inside which looks stylish. Back is also made of plastic and is easily prone to scratches. This tv has a special joystick button at the back with which we can change channels, volume, go to the tv menu and can even turn off the tv.
Table stand is black in color and made of plastic. Quality of stand is good and is also very stylish. But it is prone to scratches.
Samsung J5100 has a black plastic body at the back made of good quality plastic which gets dirty easily and also prone to scratches. There is a special joystick button at the back which provides several basic functions.
Borders are made of plastic and are black in color. Although border is thick but it is beautifully molded inside and therefore looks very thin if seen from distance.
Samsung J5100 is not very thick. It is an edge-lit led tv.
Picture Quality is not that good. Colors could be much better.
Contrast ratio is not that good. Blacks are not deep and appear blueish. Also color uniformity could be much better.
Gaming and Sports
While watching a pure black scene, if brightness is increased by few points from default setting, we saw major backlight bleed at the left side of screen. We ignored it because it is not visible at default brightness. Overall no major backlight bleed.
Black uniformity is above average. Though Blacks appear blueish. If seen carefully there are major black spots on the entire screen. Also some banding is also visible at the middle if we are not exactly in front of the screen.
Input lag is not too high. So as an entry level model, it is good for gaming.
Gray Uniformity is also above average. The only problem is black shadow on the four corners.

We calibrated the tv for a dark room. There are very basic controls available on this tv. Therefore we have adjusted only contrast and reduced it to achieve the target white luminance of 120 cd/m2. This has not affected calibration very much.

This is a special joystick button provided at the back. It provides four functions namely, sound control, channel change, tv menu, power on/off.
Remote is a basic one which comes with other end low models.
By default TV is set to standard mode, so at first we changed it to movie mode. We also changed the color temperature to warm because it is best suitable for our desired calibration.
As per our readings, by default picture is not up to the mark, but due to very little controls available, we cannot change the picture quality very much. We only reduced the contrast setting to achieve our desired white luminance of 120 cd/m2. Rest everything is left at default.
We advice you to not change brightness setting at all because in our case changing it by even point caused us massive flashlighting issue at the extreme left of the tv screen. Therefore we left it at default.
Indian Cinema Mode and Cricket Mode when used brighten the colors to give more vivid colors. It also changes the sound type to give the feel of movie or sports respectively.
The picture settings given above are suitable only for a dark room. It also varies by each unit. Therefore if you experience any loss in picture quality, just return to default settings or you can also contact us at any time.
