Type : LED     Resolution : 720p     Refresh Rate : 50 Hz

The LJ616D is a HD Ready LED TV with decent picture quality. The viewing angles are perfect and the TV loses few colours at an angle. The TV displays a wide range of colours and this is the major improvement in this model compared to the LJ573D. The TV comes with a Magic Remote which makes the TV easy to use. The smart platform is very user friendly and contains a lot of apps. Unfortunately, there are no high end features to improve the picture quality as found in expensive models.

Advantages:
  Good Smart features
  Wide viewing angle
Disadvantages:
  Blacks are not deep

Design

Curved : No

The design of the TV looks blocky. The TV is very thick and ports at the back will be difficult to access once the TV is wall mounted. The borders are also thick and have a weird design. The back looks similar to LJ573D with a textured finish. The table stand is almost as thick as the TV, this can be a problem for those having the narrow tables.

Stand

The stand has a wide footprint and is equal to the width of the TV, thus a wide top table is required to hold it properly. The stand looks good but unfortunately its quality is not very good. The stand supports the TV well.

Borders

Top & Side Border : 1.1" (2.7cm)
Bottom Border : 1.14" (2.9cm)

The borders are thick and due to this the TV looks blocky in the room. The design of the borders is sort of typical and do not looks good.

Back

The rear of the TV is similar to 5 series of 2016 as well as 2017 such as LJ573D. It is made of plastic and has a reflective textured finish which attracts fingerprints. The rear inputs will be difficult to access if the TV is placed close to the wall.

Thickness

Max Thickness : 3.3" (8.5cm)

The TV is quite thick and the thickness is more towards the bottom. It will stick out from the wall if mounted.

Build Quality

The build quality is decent and the TV is quite durable. Everything is neatly made with good quality plastic.

Picture Quality

The LG LJ616D has an average picture quality. The dark scenes on the TV do not look good because of the greyish blacks and poor contrast ratio especially in a dark room. The peak brightness is below average and not sufficient to fight glares and thus it can be a little problematic to watch the TV at a place where direct reflections are falling on the TV screen. There are no local dimming and HDR features as found in expensive models. The colour uniformity could be better, the edges and corners of the screen are dark compared to the middle and this is visible while watching the TV. The picture also suffers from motion blur due to the low response time of the TV. The two most positive aspects of the LJ616D picture quality are wide viewing angle and wide colour gamut. These two features alone make the TV worth recommending despite of the various shortcomings in the picture quality.

Contrast Ratio

Black : 0.117 cd/m2
White : 125.684 cd/m2
Contrast : 1075:1

The native contrast ratio is below average for this TV. This is due to the IPS panel used in the TV which has greyish blacks. However, this is not a big issue if watching the TV in a bright room.

Peak Brightness

Peak 2% Window : 252.2 cd/m2
Peak 100% Window : 252.4 cd/m2

The TV has bad peak brightness. In ISF Dark Room mode which is the ideal mode for the most accurate picture quality, the peak brightness is not enough to fight the glares in a bright room. It is just sufficient for a dark room.

Viewing Angle

Panel type : IPS

The viewing angle is good on this TV. There is slight loss in the colours at an angle. The TV is good for a wide viewing room filled with a lot of people.

Panel Uniformity

Max Colour Dev. (50% pattern) : 2.7
Avg Luminance Dev. (5% pattern) : 15.75

The edges are slightly darker especially on the corners. Luckily, the screen is clear and there is no dirty screen effect visible.

Luminance uniformity of the TV is good. There is minor flash lighting at the bottom left corner which is barely visible in regular viewing.

Native Resolution - 720p

The picture looks sharp and detailed in the native resolution 1080p.

Reflections - Bright Room

The reflections can be a problem in a bright room as the TV is only average while dealing with reflections. The TV has a semi-gloss screen.

Local Dimming

Local Dimming : No

The LJ616D LED TV lacks the local dimming feature.

Gamut Coverage

sRGB gamut coverage : 95.46%
Adobe RGB gamut coverage : 71.28%

Rec.709 is the color space used in most of the media devices today ranging from HD cable to Blu-rays and LJ616D covers 95.46% colors of this space. Due to this, picture on this TV looks quite colourful compared to the LJ573D which only covers 93.5%. There is a significant improvement in the colours and the picture quality with every 1% increase in the gamut coverage, therefore although the colours of this TV are good but still there is a lot of scope for improvement.

Pre Calibration

White Balance dE : 13.25
Color dE : 8.01
Gamma : 2.12

Out of the box, there is a large error in the picture quality and it is clearly visible and thus there is a lot of scope for improvement. The colour temperature is quite cool with oversaturated blues. The gamma curve is not flat and increases significantly beyond 80% white to 2.4 which is far away from our calibration goals of 2.2.

Post Calibration

White Balance dE : 0.39
Color dE : 0.82
Gamma : 2.25

There is a significant improvement in the picture quality after calibration. The TV has all the advance controls to improve the picture and the Colour Management System of the TV is quite responsive but some colours, mostly blue, were still a bit off. Still, the picture has improved a lot. The white De is reduced to 0.39 and Colour De to 0.82 which is excellent. The gamma curve is also improved and is now close to our goal of 2.2.

Motion

Motion Blur
Motion Interpolation

The Motion Interpolation feature is available by the name of Tru Motion in LG TVs but unfortunately the LJ616D lacks this feature. It helps to smooth the motion in the video.

Inputs

Input Lag

Game mode : 27.2 ms
Outside Game mode : 47.7 ms

The input lag is high outside the game mode and thus it is recommended to use the game mode for playing games. While using the game mode the TV automatically disables most of the picture processing options to reduce the input lag. Hence, limited options would be available to adjust the picture quality. Adjust these as per your preferences.

Smart TV

Smart Features

The TV comes with a Magic Remote and it makes using the Smart features fun and easy. The WebOS smart platform is very easy to use and user friendly. The remote has dedicated buttons to access the specific features which further increases the convenience. The media on the TV can be played in three ways, by using the apps, casting the media directly on the TV using screen mirroring or WiFi direct and by using the USB device plugged into the TV USB ports. By using the Mini TV option available in the web browser, you can watch the TV in small window at the bottom while simultaneously browsing the internet.

Apps

The TV has a lot of famous apps that come pre-installed. There is also one cricket game added specifically in this model. Overall, the TV has a lot of apps and more apps can be downloaded using the LG content store. The apps takes time to load depending on the internet speed but runs smooth once loaded properly. Internal memory is limited to 572 MB and it cannot be expanded.

Power Consump (Standby) : 0.0 W

The readings are taken after calibration.

Remote

The TV comes with the famous Magic Remote and this is the best remote we’ve ever used. It fits very comfortably in the hand as if its tailor made. The remote has a motion sensor which is very responsive and works like a mouse on the computer. It also has a scroll wheel so the user can scroll and quickly select the desired option. One can also change the settings and search the content using the voice commands through the built in microphone.

- Magic Remote
- Table Stand
- Power Cord

Conclusion

The LJ616D is a good TV available only in the 32 inch. The TV do not offers the best picture and sound quality compared to other 32 inch models but combined with the impressive features, it is definitely worth purchasing. The closest competitor of the LJ616D is Sony W622E which has slightly better picture and sound quality at similar price but Sony has very few apps and there is no Magic Remote.

Thus, LJ616D offers more value for money but Sony W622E is the perfect choice for the best design and performance.
